Stream Of Consciousness.
Think of a river, a river flowing right in your brain. Okay, weird image, I know… but that’s the only way I know how to think about it. If you’re like me, you have an internal monologue that won’t shut up. My mind is moving at a thousand miles a minute and sometimes it’s exhausting. Sometimes the only thing that will heal me is grabbing a pen, a piece of paper, and a timer. Some days I just need to get it all out. For this assignment you will be practicing this exercise in “word vomit” with me.
Set the timer for 10 minutes.
Go on a walk.
Forget your cell phone. Forget your dog. Forget your friends or family members.
Forget your day. Forget school. Forget work.
Get settled at a table or desk.
Set the timer for 10 more minutes.
No music. No TV. No distractions.
Step three: Write.
No really, that’s it. Just write.
Don’t stop. Don’t get up. Don’t get food. Don’t get a drink.
Your pencil or pen should be moving on the paper for the entire ten minutes.
If you are using a computer, your fingers should not leave the keyboard.
Don’t hit backspace or delete. Don’t edit your words.
Don’t go back and add punctuation or change how you said something.
It was perfect the first time.
The point of this exercise is to see the flow of your own ideas.
To see how one detail or word can spark another idea or description or narrative.
